Highway 70 DUI Fatality Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Marysville car accident lawyer. In the early hours of the morning on Friday, February 24, 2017, a single-vehicle rollover collision occurred on Highway 70 near the Erle Road off-ramp.
What Happened?
According to a press release by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 33-year-old Marysville man was behind the wheel of a 2003 Acura that was traveling southbound on Highway 70 in Yuba County. At approximately 12:35 a.m. on Friday morning the driver lost control of his vehicle and veered into the center divide. In an effort to correct his positioning on the highway the motorist overcorrected and his vehicle traveled across all southbound lanes of the highway. The vehicle then hit the concrete shoulder median which caused the vehicle to flip. The vehicle came to a rest a short distance from the highway, landing in a chain-link fence that is used to separate Highway 70 and Chestnut Avenue.
Were There Injuries?
There were two people in the vehicle at the time of the collision; the driver was taken by ambulance to Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville for treatment of his minor injuries he suffered in the accident. The passenger was a 28-year-old Oliverhurst man. The young man was partially ejected from the vehicle and succumbed to his traumatic injuries at the scene of the accident; his identity is not being released at this time, pending notification of his family.
Ongoing Investigation
The CHP is leading the investigation on this tragic fatal accident. Upon receiving treatment for his injuries the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and gross vehicular manslaughter. Investigators with the CHP stated additional charges could possibly be added once his toxicology reports are made available.
