Highway 37 Added to Solano Priority List

Car accidents happen every day and the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) reports that over 30,000 people die in United States accidents every year. The problem isn’t going away either, NHTSA also reports that fatal accidents have increased in frequency across the nation in recent years.
These accidents happen for a wide range of reasons. Distracted driving, DUI, road rage, and other problems are widespread. However, the cause of an accident isn’t always a driver. Frequently, roadways that are intrinsically dangerous are the primary reason that an accident happens.
In Fairfield, one particular roadway that has posed threats to drivers is receiving more attention from local authorities. The renovation of this roadway would potentially prevent numerous accidents and, subsequently, accident injuries and fatalities.
Highway 37
The section of Highway 37 that runs near and through Fairfield is thought to be sinking into the ground. This problem is compounded by rising sea levels which affect many areas of the San Francisco Bay Area. The Solano Transportation Authority recently placed Highway 37 on a list of project priorities. However, the project is not yet scheduled to receive funding.
Getting Funding
The executive director of the Solano Transportation Authority reported that Highway 37 is “years away” from having competitive status as a project vying for federal and state funding. The next step that the project will go through is a complete review of environmental issues, which can take over five years to complete. Work on the environmental review phase may begin as early as July 2018.
Halls told reporters that the highway is not yet ready for construction to begin, so it is unlikely to receive funding soon.
The Problem
Although the project may not be ready for construction, the highway was completely closed twice in the last year due to flooding. Additionally, one study concludes that, by the year 2050, sections of the highway will be permanently inundated with water and by 2100, the section of highway will be permanently flooded. Halls himself noted that the year 2050 is “not that far off.”
Wet Road Dangers
Even roads that aren’t completely inundated with water can be dangerous when wet. Only a thin layer of water is liable to decrease the ability of drivers to maneuver around dangerous roadway obstacles as well as increase the amount of time it takes for vehicles to stop. A small amount of water on the roadway is also able to cause vehicles to hydroplane, which frequently leads to collisions and serious auto accident injuries.
