High School Coach Arrested

I’m Ed Smith, a Sexual Assault Lawyer in Sacramento. A Kennedy High School soccer coach was taken into custody by the Sheriff’s Department on Christmas Day on suspicion of trafficking in underage girls. He has since been arraigned and charged with felony counts of false imprisonment, pandering, and human trafficking.

Underage Girls

The recently dismissed boys’ soccer coach for Kennedy High School, Elan Daniel Seagraves, is being held on two-million dollars bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail after a Christmas Day 911 call. A 17-year-old girl called police in South Sacramento and reported that she was being forced into human trafficking and had been assaulted by a man waiting in a nearby vehicle. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the report and found Seagraves in the vehicle along with another 17-year-old girl, also determined to have been forced into human trafficking.

The School District’s Response

Sacramento City Unified School District issued a statement confirming that Seagraves had started the season as the soccer coach, but that he will no longer be working with children in the district in any capacity. Seagraves has reportedly worked with Sacramento City Unified kids since 2013 as an instructional aide, substitute teacher, and youth sports coach.

No Warnings from Background Checks

The school district’s statement also noted that Seagraves had passed a background check and that he had no prior offenses on his record when hired. Seagraves was also, until recently, employed as a driver with both Uber and Lyft– both have since terminated his access to the respective platforms. Seagraves reportedly also passed background checks during the application process.

Sexual Assault is a Crime

Sexual Assault is a crime that no one deserves to be subjected to. Healing after such a traumatic event can be a very difficult experience for survivors and their loved ones. Many survivors are hesitant to report the sexual abuse, feeling ashamed or fearful of reprisals. It is important to seek medical attention from trained professionals and law enforcement who can attend to your injuries and collect evidence to prosecute the guilty party. There is no time limit to report sexual assault in California, and no laws preventing survivors from coming forward.
