Highway 99 Collision Occurred When Driver Crashed Through Concrete Barrier

A head-on collision in Sacramento County on August 22 resulted in the death of a truck driver and serious injuries to two police officers. The accident was reported by the South Sacramento California Highway Patrol (CHP) as occurring at 4:35 a.m. along Highway 99 near Dillard Road south of Elk Grove. According to the police report, the driver of a Dodge pickup, identified as a 25-year-old Manteca resident, was going south along the highway when the vehicle crashed through the concrete barrier in the median into the northbound lanes. That’s when it struck a patrol vehicle belonging to the Galt Police Department.

Injuries Reported in the Head-On Collision

Two passengers in the pickup, a Dublin resident and a Turlock resident, both age 26, suffered injuries described as moderate in the crash and were taken to a local hospital. The two police officers, one male and one female, were taken to UC Davis Medical Center. One of the officers is reported to be in critical condition, while the other has been stabilized.

Investigators Determining What Caused the Fatal Accident

Fire Department responders were required to extricate the police officers from their vehicle. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the head-on collision is underway by police investigators. No information has been released on whether drug or alcohol consumption was a factor in the accident.

Dangers of a Head-On Collision

Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents. This is because the velocity of both vehicles is combined during the impact. Serious physical trauma is a common result with high medical bills, the inability to work for a long time and the pain and suffering that goes along with the injury. Common causes include:

Recovery of Damages Following a Head-On Collision

When someone has been injured due to a negligent driver, they may place a claim for compensation to recover the following:

  • All of their medical costs associated with the accident injury can be recovered, including their hospitalization, medications, surgeries, rehabilitation, and others. If the injury continues into the future or results in permanent disability, those costs are factored into the settlement.
  • Wages lost due to the inability to work are recoverable. This includes any bonuses or other perks of the job. If the injured party returns to work, but in a reduced capacity or lower-paying job, the difference in salary is factored in.
  • Pain and suffering include physical, emotional, and psychological problems. In some cases, the injured party develops post-traumatic stress disorder, which can be debilitating and requires professional help to overcome.
