Head-On Collision Kills Man in North Modesto

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto Motorcycle Accident Lawyer. A man was killed early in the evening on Saturday, September 23 when his motorcycle collided head-on with an SUV in north Modesto, according to the California Highway Patrol.

What Happened?

According to the police report from the CHP, a motorcycle being operated by a 59-year-old man was traveling too fast when his bike collided head-on with an SUV around 6pm on Saturday night. The male victim was flown to a local hospital following the accident but succumbed to his injuries.

Responding officers were told by witnesses that the motorcycle was traveling southbound on Pentecost Drive headed towards Kiernan Avenue going 55 MPH. The motorcycle crashed head-on into a Mazda CX5 that was traveling northbound in oncoming traffic.

Police said that the person driving the Mazda CX5, a 31-year-old woman, was not injured in the crash. Police have not said if the victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, or if drugs or alcohol played a factor. The name of the victim has not been released.

Increased Enforcement by Modesto Police

The Modesto Police Department has announced that it will conduct an enforcement operation this week in an effort to reduce the number of injuries and deaths related to motorcycle accidents.

The department will be sending additional police officers to areas that experience heavy motorcycle traffic and locations where crashes happen throughout the week, including this upcoming Saturday. The press release from the department said that officers will be on the lookout for violations committed by both motorcyclists and motorists that can cause accidents.

A grant from the State Office of Traffic Safety is funding the enforcement operation.

After a decade low of 352 motorcycle deaths in 2010, the rate has jumped by 28 percent to 453 statewide deaths in 2013.

The victim of the accident on Saturday night was the third person to die in a motorcycle-related crash in Modesto this year and second this month. Earlier in September, a 33-year-old man died when his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a pickup truck in north Modesto.

According to data released by the state of California, the most common causes of motorcycle crashes are unsafe turns, speeding, and both motorcyclists and drivers being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
