Red Bluff Man Dies in Redding Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Redding personal injury lawyer. A collision that occurred south of Redding on Friday, February 23, 2018, fatally injured one individual and left two others with injuries, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP). Initial reports indicated that CHP officers suspect DUI to have been an accident factor.

I’d like to express my sympathy to those suffering after the loss of their loved one. I hope the others injured in this accident make a full recovery.

Collision Information

CHP issued a report on Monday, February 26, 2018, regarding the incident. The report indicated that Gustave Martinez, a man from nearby Red Bluff of unreported age, had been driving his vehicle, a 2003 Buick Century, northbound at high speeds on Highway 99 a short distance south of the Riverside Avenue intersection.

Martinez reportedly failed to slow down as he approached a 2008 Dodge Ram and, as a result, collided with the rear-end of the Dodge.

Injuries and Response

Responding officers reportedly determined that Martinez had been drinking alcohol prior to the crash and arrested him on-site before releasing him to the care of emergency medical officials who transported him to the St. Elizabeth Community Hospital for treatment of major injuries.

Martinez’s condition reportedly worsened before he was transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Redding, where he was not able to withstand his injuries and was pronounced officially deceased.

The Dodge was reportedly being driven by Daltyn McCaughey, an 18-year-old Cottonwood resident and contained one passenger at the time of the accident who was only identified as a 17-year-old woman. The two were reported to have suffered injuries and complained of pain. Whether or not they received medical attention is presently unreported.

Other Recent Area Accidents

This collision is the third fatal accident to occur in the Redding area within the last month. The first collision took place on Sunday, February 4, 2018, at around 3:30 p.m. along Keswick Dam Road. A motorcyclist and passenger passed away after sustaining injuries in a collision involving an SUV. The motorcyclist reportedly failed to negotiate a turn and slid into the oncoming SUV, despite efforts from the SUV driver to avoid the collision.

The second collision occurred on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, when a pedestrian crossing the road on Highway 237 at about 7:30 p.m. was hit by an oncoming vehicle driving in the northbound lane. Investigators noted that the accident is not suspected to have involved any criminal traffic violations.
