Groin Tear in Auto Accidents
Groin Tear in Auto Accidents – Unfortunately, car accidents are a widespread occurrence in the United States and many people can sustain serious injuries as a result of them. Some people may have to spend time in a hospital, wind up with long-term complications, and lives can be changed forever as a result of serious accidents. Some of the statistics that have been published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)include:
- In the United States there were close to 33,000 people killed in car accidents in 2014.
- There were about 10 people killed for every 100,000 people living in the United States that year.
- In 2014, there were more than 3,000 people killed in the state of California alone.
Even those that survive can still end up with serious injuries as a result of these car accidents. This can include bone fractures, traumatic brain injuries, and muscle tears. One of the damages that someone could sustain is a tear of the groin.
The Role of the Groin
The groin is the colloquial term used to describe the muscles that rest along the inside of the hip. Five different muscles make up the groin. These are:
- The pectineus
- The adductor brevis
- The adductor longus
- The adductor magnus
- The gracilis
These five muscles play an essential role in the body, which includes:
- Adducting the hip, or helping people to “close” their hips around their pelvis
- Flexing (or bending) the knee
Like other muscles, the groin is prone to be damaged in more ways than one. While stretching the groin before physical activity can help reduce the chances of an injury, this cannot completely remove the risk.
Mechanism of Injury in a Car Accident
Traumatic injuries can happen at any time in a car accident, and this can lead to injuries of the groin. In a car accident, it is possible for people to have their leg pinned against the door or rolled up with the front of the car. When this happens, the forces of the auto accident can lead to a jerking, twisting motion of the leg. This can stretch the groin to the point of tearing. Some symptoms that might be notice include:
- An inability to close the hips
- Trouble flexing the knee
- Significant pain
- Difficulty walking
These are all signs of a tear of the groin, which can take months to recover from.
Help from a Lawyer
When someone has torn a muscle in his or her groin, the rehabilitation process can be long, and some people could require surgery. People would need to learn how to walk again as a result of their injury. This can place families under a lot of stress. For help with these issues, it is a good idea to meet with a personal injury lawyer in Sacramento. Feel free to reach out and ask for help because you could be entitled to financial compensation.
