Gravel Spill on Highway 70 in Yuba County Causes Multiple Crashes

A gravel spill on Highway 70 in Yuba County causes multiple crashes early Friday morning, September 5, 2025, at approximately 6 a.m., a gravel spill triggered four separate vehicle accidents. The incidents occurred on the southbound side of the freeway, between the Plumas Arboga overcrossing and Olivehurst. According to Caltrans, one lane was closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the debris, with full access restored shortly after 8 a.m.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has launched a public appeal for help in identifying the trucking company responsible for the spill. The loose gravel not only disrupted traffic but also created a hazardous roadway condition that contributed to the series of collisions. Anyone with information is urged to contact CHP to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Safety Reminder: How to Respond to Unexpected Roadway Hazards

Road hazards like loose gravel can appear without warning and pose serious risks to drivers. If you encounter debris on the road, avoid sudden braking or swerving, as these reactions can lead to spinouts or collisions. Instead, reduce your speed gradually and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Stay alert during early morning or late-night drives and always report hazardous conditions to local authorities to help prevent further accidents.
