Getting Around Downtown Sacramento

Getting Around Downtown Sacramento – Downtown is the central hub of Sacramento. Home to the California State Capitol and the Sacramento King’s Golden One Center, downtown Sacramento has remarkably grown over the last 20 years. The area has escalated into an urban center that offers unique bars, farm-to-fork restaurants, boutique shopping, lively performing arts theaters, vibrant museums, outdoor concerts, and multi-cultural festivals. On any given night, you can enjoy fine dining at one of the more than 100 restaurants, catch a theater performance or dance to your heart’s content at one of the recently revamped lounges.

Historic Old Sacramento

Downtown Sacramento also provides excellent access to the nearby waterfront and historic district. Just a hop and skip away from the downtown area is Old Sacramento. With the gold rush-era buildings, horse-drawn carriages and cobblestone streets, you’ll feel like you have traveled back in time. Old Sac attracts more than two million visitors each year.

Sacramento’s Downtown Traffic

Thousands of people travel to downtown Sacramento every day to explore what the city has to offer. However, getting around the downtown area can be challenging. Those who live, work and play in the vicinity know the complications of traffic during certain hours.

Like most downtown areas, the streets in Sacramento are one-way. The major thoroughfares are Interstate 80, Business 80 and Interstate 5. Both I-80 and Business 80 run west to the northeast, while I-5 runs north and south. Other significant roads are State Highway 99, which comes from the southern part of the city to join Business 80 and the Garden Highway, which runs east and west.

Getting Around Sacramento’s Streets Safely

Getting Around Downtown Sacramento

Sacramento is the perfect combination of city life and suburbia. Centrally located, Sacramento is just a few hours away from popular tourist destinations such as the Bay area, Napa Valley, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. Thousands of people travel through Sacramento to get to those locations every year. That’s why maneuvering through Sacramento’s roadways can be risky. According to the City-Data.com, a city profiling website, Sacramento drivers have a higher chance of being involved in a fatal car accident than any other drivers in California.

The website reported that as the economy was recovering and starting to take hold in 2010, more vehicles were on the road as a result. But while deadly accidents throughout the state continued at a fairly steady rate, they significantly increased in the Sacramento region. Based on data from the website:

  • In 2010, there were 10.3 fatal accidents per 100,000 people in Sacramento.
  • That number is far above the 5.1 accidents per 100,000 people for the state’s average.
  • In 2011, the number of fatal crashes in Sacramento has improved to 8.6 per 100,000 people.
