State Route 160 Gas Tanker Rollover Crash

A gas tanker rollover crash occurred on October 15 due to a collision with another vehicle. The accident occurred shortly after midnight along State Route 160 just south of West Brannan Island Road, when the tanker truck collided with an SUV. Both vehicles reportedly overturned in the wreck, and a large amount of fuel spilled out on the roadway.

Hazmat Crew and Fish and Wildlife Called to Gas Tanker Rollover Accident

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the westbound lane was blocked. Due to the danger of the fuel leak, firefighters, a Hazmat crew and Fish and Wildlife were called to the scene, where 5,000 gallons of fuel were leaking. Fortunately, it was determined that the leak did not reach the river.

SigAlert Issued  in Gas Tanker Rollover Crash

Although the SUV could be towed, the semi could not until its tanks were emptied. Some hours later, a few local residents were allowed through the area using caution, but a SigAlert was issued for other motorists. The SigAlert was finally canceled shortly after 10:30 a.m.

Investigation Being Conducted Into Accident Cause

Injuries have yet to be reported. Investigators with the CHP traffic crash unit are determining which motorist was at fault in the gas tanker rollover accident and how it occurred.

Transporting Hazardous Cargo

Trucking accidents are dangerous enough, but a gas tanker rollover crash causes increased hazards to those in the area. When spillage of contents occurs, just a spark is enough to cause an explosion, impacting other vehicles and causing a raging fire. First responders usually close off a wide area around a gas tanker rollover to avoid the risk of explosion and dangerous fumes. Injuries that can occur to those nearby include:

  • Injuries caused by an explosion
  • Burns caused by corrosive materials or fire
  • Amputations caused by an explosion
  • Eye trauma caused by fumes and toxic chemicals
  • Spinal cord injuries from being thrown in an explosion
  • Traumatic brain injuries from the shock of an explosion or being thrown through the air
  • Damage to the lungs caused by exposure to smoke, fire, fumes and toxic gasses

Suffering Injuries in a Gas Tanker Rollover Crash

Those who are near a rollover crash by a gas tanker may suffer significant trauma, which can lead to long hospitalization, burn treatments, surgeries and extensive medical care. If the trucker or trucking company was the cause, they may be able to file a personal injury claim to recover compensation. Damages may be recoverable from multiple parties, such as the driver, company, fuel truck manufacturer, etc.
