Funding Approved by California State for Solano County Highway Construction
On Wednesday, August 12, 2020, the California Transportation Commission (CTC) approved 66.1 billion dollars of funds for the second phase of a large-scale highway construction project in Solano County. This phase is the second in a seven-part plan to improve highways across the county and will focus on the I-80/Route 12/I-680 interchange.
Project Details
According to officials, this phase of the project will replace the current single-lane eastbound connector from State Route 12 to eastbound I-80 with an improved two-lane connector. The project will also construct off and onramps from Green Valley Road in Fairfield onto I-80.
Ron Rowlett, the board chair of the Solano Transportation Authority (STA) and mayor of Vacaville, released a public statement about the project. Rowlett indicated that the project is expected to “greatly enhance the flow of traffic” as well as “improve safety” for freight traffic and commuters driving through the busy junction. Rowlett added that the project would also “jump-start Solano County’s economy” by providing work for construction laborers.
Funding
The project is reportedly financed by funds from the California Senate Bill 1’s Trade Corridor Enhancement Program as well as local bridge toll funds and the State Transportation Improvement Program. Construction on the project is expected to begin in September and will reportedly last over a period of two years.
Other Projects
This project is one of several construction jobs along I-80 that STA is working on in an effort to relieve traffic congestion on Solano roadways. STA indicated that they are seeking funding for a project that would convert eight miles of HOV lanes in Fairfield to managed lanes, or highway lanes controlled by a management plan like express toll lanes, reversible lanes, and bus lanes. STA reports that they have already submitted the project for state grants and will probably receive an answer regarding funding by December 2020, with construction potentially beginning in 2021.
Additionally, STA has also submitted requests for grant money to expand the truck-weighing facility in Cordelia and even has plans to extend managed lanes from the Carquinez Bridge in Vallejo all the way to the Yolo County border.
