Fresno Fatal Pedestrian Crash

A Fresno fatal pedestrian crash claimed the life of a woman in west Fresno on the afternoon of January 15, 2019. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. along Hughes Avenue in the vicinity of Belmont Avenue. Authorities responding to the scene found a woman lying unconscious in the middle of the street. Medical personnel transported the injured woman to a hospital for immediate treatment. Sadly, the woman was pronounced dead during hospitalization. Her identity has been withheld due to pending notification of family members. My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the deceased woman in their time of loss and sorrow.

Investigation of the Fresno Fatal Pedestrian Crash

Officers from the Fresno Police Department said the driver of the vehicle involved in the pedestrian accident drove away from the scene. The motorist later informed officials that he had thought his car collided with a shopping cart in the road and drove home. Conversely, the driver is cooperating with investigators and did not appear to be under the influence. It is unknown whether he will be facing any charges for the alleged hit and run accident.

Common Injuries in a Pedestrian Accident

The exposure that those on foot have, means that being involved in a collision with a motor vehicle can result in catastrophic injuries. These may include spinal cord injuries, bone fractures, internal trauma, traumatic brain injuries, and more. Suffering any type of pedestrian injury can result in life-changing consequences for those affected.

Pedestrian Accidents and Personal Injury Damages

Drivers have a duty of care to remain alert for people on foot. However, not all drivers fulfill that responsibility. This can result in devastating consequences for a person injured in a pedestrian accident. An injured pedestrian may face costly lifestyle changes and mounting medical expenses. If the pedestrian injury requires extended time away from work to recover, the individual may experience a significant loss of income. Those with permanent disabilities after a pedestrian accident may have to adapt to a new way of life if they are unable to return to work. In these circumstances, an injured walker may be able to recover compensation for those losses through a personal injury claim. As with any case of personal injury, negligence must be proven on the part of the motorist to recover damages. To learn more about how fault is determined in a traffic collision, watch the following video.

Wrongful Death in a Pedestrian Accident

When a loved one is lost in a pedestrian accident, the family of the deceased may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim. These types of claims allow surviving family members to pursue compensation for funeral and burial expenses, end-of-life medical treatment, loss of companionship, income the deceased provided for the household, and other damages. Since a wide array of legal issues can arise after a pedestrian collision, an experienced wrongful death lawyer in Fresno can help by thoroughly investigating the incident to properly determine fault. This may require the use of experts such as collision reconstruction experts and economists to substantiate the losses incurred in your case. By doing so, the attorney can present a strong case for compensation for your loved one’s death.
