Fresno County Major Injury Accident — A motor vehicle accident in west Fresno County left four parties hospitalized on November 11, 2018. The collision occurred shortly before 8:30 in the morning along the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, just south of Derrick Avenue. A Lexus SUV reportedly drifted off of the interstate moments before striking a vehicle being hauled by an RV. The impact of the collision caused the Lexus to overturn along the right-hand lane of the highway. One out of the eight occupants of the Lexus was allegedly ejected from the vehicle in the collision. The victim was transported via air ambulance to the hospital for treatment of major head trauma while three others were taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Officials have not yet released an update regarding the conditions of those injured.

Investigation of the Fresno County Major Injury Accident

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). However, a preliminary report by CHP has suggested that the crash may have been caused by speeding. The CHP is also investigating whether the occupants of the Lexus were wearing safety restraints.

Most Common Types of Car Accident Injuries

The most common types of injuries sustained in a car accident include the following:

  • Abdominal Trauma: Blunt trauma to the abdomen often results from the impact with the steering wheel or seat belt in a motor vehicle accident. MRIs or CT scans do not always show the trauma, and symptoms may present themselves a short time following a crash. They usually involve fever, tachycardia, and pain to the abdomen.
  • Chest Damage: Blunt chest trauma may result in rib fractures or contusion of the heart. In some cases, a fractured rib can puncture a lung. This can prove fatal if appropriate treatment is not rendered.
  • Head Injuries: This is among the most dangerous types of injuries. It can involve a penetrating injury or a closed one. A head injury may be caused by an impact of the head with a window, steering wheel, or a flying object within the vehicle. Penetrating injuries occur as a result of the entrance of an object through the skull whereas closed ones involve movement of the brain accelerating against the skull.
  • Psychological Injury: This can result from the trauma of a motor vehicle accident. In some cases, the victim may be left with apprehension that another crash will occur again the next time they ride in a motor vehicle. This type of injury often requires psychological treatment by a professional.

Passenger Injury Claims

When a passenger riding in a vehicle suffers injuries in a car accident, he or she may be able to bring a claim against multiple parties involved in the collision. Conversely, if the driver of the vehicle the passenger was riding in was determined to be at fault for the crash, a claim could be filed against the driver for damages incurred. If the victim’s losses are in excess of the driver’s automobile insurance policy, the victim may seek recourse through their own car insurance so long as he or she has under-insured motorist protection.
