Four Minors Involved in Berkeley Car Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Berkeley car accident lawyer. A hit-and-run crash into a parked car last month turned out to be a vehicle driven by four minors. Two of the minors were detained in the car accident. However, no arrests were made.

What Happened

The crash occurred shortly after 10:00 in the evening near the intersection of Russell Street and Benvenue Avenue. One minor was driving southbound on Russell and collided with a parked car on Benvenue. Initially, it was reported that several vehicles had been struck; however, this turned out to be untrue. The crash caused extensive damage to the front of the vehicle the minors were in.

Aftermath of the Accident

According to a representative of the Berkeley Police Department, following the crash, two to three of the occupants of the vehicle tried to flee the accident site. They were detained by the police, one of whom was detained outside the Elmwood Theater on College Avenue, several blocks away from the crash site.

Hit and Run Accidents

This type of accident has become more common over the years. While sometimes a hit-and-run accident may only involve an object such as a stop sign, parked vehicle or building, it is a much more serious offense when someone is injured or killed. In 2014 in Berkeley, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 741 fatalities and injuries were caused by motor vehicle accidents. Sixty-one of those were hit-and-run accidents. If you look at the statistics for Alameda County for that year, there were 876 hit-and-run injuries and fatalities.

The Financial End of a Hit-and-Run Accident

If you’ve been injured in a hit-and-run, you are probably wondering whether you will have to pay your medical expenses, lost time from work and other costs associated with it. An experienced hit-and-run lawyer can help you by gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and working with forensic specialists and accident reconstruction.

Locating the Hit-and-Run Offender

By gathering all the necessary information about the accident and using our investigative techniques we are often able to track down the identity of the hit-and-run driver. In the event your loved one passed away as the result of a hit-and-run due to extreme negligence, we can file a wrongful death lawsuit to recover damages for the family. When it proves to be impossible to locate the offender, our office can help by working toward the maximum compensation you can receive from your insurer. If the amount is insufficient to provide a fair settlement, we can help you file a lawsuit to recover damages.
