Safety Tips: First Time Riding a Motorcycle

When you are just learning the ropes of any motor vehicle, it can feel like loads of information to take in all at once. Here are some essential safety suggestions to keep first-time motorcyclists safe and comfortable on their new ride:

  • Be observant – Target fixation is an issue for new riders. As a bike pilot, it is crucial to keep in mind that you will go wherever you’re looking. If you are staring at the ground up ahead, that’s where you’ll end up. When you are out on the road, look far out into the distance and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Practice defensive riding – It’s important to ride as if everything and everyone on the road is out to get you. Many motorists fail to see approaching motorcyclists. The stakes for survival are much higher as a motorcyclist because you have so much less physical protection, so act accordingly.
  • Adjust your mirrors before you take off – Sometimes you may need a wrench to adjust your motorcycle’s mirrors. All you do is simply check their positioning before riding. You can get in riding position to ensure that they are where you need them to be.
  • Wear proper footwear – Get shoes with good traction. Roads can be slippery for many reasons, whether it be snow, rain, or oil fluid leaks. The best type of footwear to purchase are shoes that are specifically meant for motorcycle riding, but any decent non-slip shoes should get you the results you are looking for.
