Fatal Three-Vehicle Accident on SR-33
The California Highway Patrol is searching for a driver that is believed to have caused a fatal three-vehicle accident on SR-33 in Merced County on June 24, 2023. The crash occurred at approximately 1:50 p.m. on State Route 33, close to Hulen Road. Officials have described the incident as one being caused by a hit-and-run motorist that did not make contact with the involved vehicles.

CHP traffic officers said witnesses observed that a vehicle, described as a grey or dark blue Audi coupe with tinted windows, reportedly tried to overtake a silver SUV on southbound State Route 33. The Audi allegedly entered the direct path of a pickup truck headed northbound on SR-33. The pickup truck driver attempted to avoid the Audi but lost control of their vehicle and collided head-on with the silver SUV.
The impact of the collision caused the pickup truck to overturn on State Route 33 and propelled the SUV onto the right side of the roadway, where it reportedly caught fire. A driver of a Ford Mustang that was traveling southbound on SR-33 swerved their vehicle in an attempt to avoid the other cars. The Ford came to a rest in a ditch, officials said. The Audi did not make contact with any of the involved vehicles and allegedly left the scene.
The Ford driver was uninjured, according to the CHP. The pickup truck driver, age 19, and their passenger sustained injuries described as minor in the car wreck. Sadly, the SUV driver was declared deceased at the crash site. A search is ongoing for the Audi driver, the California Highway Patrol reported.
