Fatal Rollover Crash on Lancey Drive in Modesto

Officials in Modesto reported a fatal rollover crash on Lancey Drive on the morning of Saturday, January 22, 2022. The incident took place around 8:00 a.m., just northeast of the intersection of Rose Avenue and Briggsmore Avenue.

Details on the Fatal Rollover Crash on Lancey Drive in Modesto

According to the Modesto Police Department (Modesto PD), a 2011 Nissan Altima was traveling westbound on Lancey Drive when, for reasons not yet known, the car reportedly drifted off the road. The Nissan allegedly struck a tree along the south side of the roadway and came to a rest on its right side after overturning.

Firefighters were called to the scene to extricate the Nissan driver who was trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency crews worked for approximately 20 minutes to free him from the mangled car. Sadly, the Nissan driver succumbed to his injuries. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office has recently identified the decedent as Jerrod Keith Bowens, 44, of Modesto.

What are the Common Causes of Single-Vehicle Collisions?

Not all single-vehicle accidents are the result of driver error. There may be other contributing factors to such crashes. These may include but are not limited to:

  • Faulty Vehicle Parts and Equipment: We depend on our vehicles to get us from point A to point B safely. However, there are some situations where our cars may fail us in the process of doing so. When a vehicle defect is the root cause of a motor vehicle collision, and there is clear and compelling evidence suggesting so, the automaker may be held liable for damages incurred. In the case of a rollover collision resulting in serious injury or death, the vehicle should be examined by an experienced accident attorney and their team of investigators to determine whether a defective roof may have played a role in the incident. That is because vehicles are expected to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 216 on roof crush resistance. When there is substantial evidence demonstrative of a vehicle roof that fails to withhold this standard, the manufacturer may also be held liable for any injuries that have been exacerbated or fatalities that have occurred as a result.
  • Road Defects: A single-vehicle accident may be the result of an inherently dangerous road. This may be proven through evidence that is demonstrative of unsafe road design and lack of roadway maintenance. In either of these situations, it is essential to have an experienced Modesto personal injury lawyer go out to the scene of the incident to take photos of any defects in the road as this evidence may be lost or destroyed over time. Keep in mind that a shorter statute of limitations applies to cases involving government entities. A case must be filed within six months of the incident date, as outlined in California Government Code Section 911.2. For more details, contact an experienced car accident lawyer in Modesto.
