Fatal Pedestrian Accident Near Northeast Fresno

I’m Ed Smith, a Fresno car accident lawyer. A man was walking in northeast Fresno during the early morning of Monday, October 23, 2017. The man was hit by two oncoming vehicles. Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the party that passed away in this devastating accident.

What Happened?

A vehicle was traveling westbound along the slow lane of Highway 180 in the vicinity of Willow Avenue at approximately 1:16 am. For unknown reasons, a vehicle struck a pedestrian and fled the scene following the collision. A second vehicle was also traveling in the same lane and collided with the man. The second driver remained at the scene until the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and emergency personnel responded to the area.

Was the Man Injured?

Emergency responders were dispatched to the area of the pedestrian accident. They located the injured man upon arrival. The man was, sadly, pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim has not yet been identified due to pending notification of next-of-kin.

What Caused the Accident?

Officials from CHP have not yet determined a cause of the accident. Typically, Traffic Collision Reports by CHP take up to two weeks to be processed. However, the second motorist involved in the incident made a report to authorities about the first vehicle striking the pedestrian and leaving the scene. It is probable that this case may be classified as a hit-and-run as the investigation continues.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a pedestrian suffered traumatic injuries every eight minutes and was killed every two hours in traffic collisions in 2013. Pedestrian fatalities accounted for fourteen percent of all traffic deaths resulting from motor vehicle accidents that same year. About one-fifth of the pedestrians fatally injured in 2013 were involved in hit-and-run accidents. A 2016 Fresno County Pedestrian Accident Statistic Report concluded that there were approximately 84 pedestrian accidents. Of these accidents in Fresno County, officials reported that 93 victims suffered injuries and 17 victims passed away due to the severity of their injuries. In 2015, the State of California had the highest number of fatalities nationwide with 697 fatal pedestrian accidents.

Accidents Involving Pedestrians

Pedestrian accidents oftentimes result in severe injuries due the vulnerability of pedestrians against motor vehicles. It is important to never assume that a driver of a vehicle is aware of your presence. Sometimes, motorists engage in reckless driving habits such as speeding, texting and driving and drinking and driving. Even if a pedestrian is following the rules of the road and exercising safety precautions, it does not always mean that motorists will drive safely.
