Losing a Family Member in a Fatal Pedestrian Accident

Losing a loved one in an unexpected fatal pedestrian accident can be overwhelming for the surviving family members. A sudden death causes not only feelings of grief but also shock and disbelief. Family members are facing a future for which they are unprepared. There are things a person can do to help themselves move through this difficult period:

  • Understand that grief and loss extend past the initial period. Give yourself time to grieve, which is different for everyone. Don’t feel pressured to do new things. That will happen in time.
  • Build a strong support network for yourself, one that you feel comfortable with. Understand that no one should grieve alone. Seek the presence of friends and family who understand the loss you feel. For some people, visiting a support group may help. Do what is right for you.
  • After a pedestrian fatality or other unexpected death, survivors want answers as to how the accident happened. This helps you understand why your loved one was torn from you. In many cases, the person’s demise is due to another’s negligence. An experienced wrongful death attorney may be able to help you find the information you need before you can move on.
  • After the initial shock, many survivors face daunting financial problems. This is especially true if the decedent contributed a large portion of the family income. Your attorney can help determine if a wrongful death lawsuit can be filed against a negligent person or entity. If so, this can help the family with end-of-life expenses such as funeral costs. If the decedent lived for a short time after the accident, it is possible to file a survivor’s action claim. This will cover hospital and medical costs associated with the fatal pedestrian accident.

How an Attorney Can Help

At our firm, we understand the mix of grief and fear a family faces, and we do everything in our power to help. We dispatch our investigators to the crash site to search for clues using accident reconstruction techniques. Our investigative team questions witnesses who saw the fatal pedestrian accident and canvass the neighborhood for information about the fleeing driver. We also obtain video footage from traffic surveillance cameras. If the driver cannot be found, we work with the family to use the deceased’s or a family member’s uninsured motorist insurance to help pay for your financial loss.
