Crash Details

According to a representative of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident was reported around 9:30 in the evening at the Northrop and Watt Avenue intersection. One vehicle, a Chevy Silverado pickup, was traveling south along Watt, and a Kia was traveling north along the same street. This is when the driver of the Kia attempted a left turn at the Northrop Avenue intersection in front of the pickup.

Injuries and Deaths

When the vehicles collided, three people were killed while two more involved suffered serious injuries. All were riding in the Kia. The Silverado driver suffered injuries that were minor in the collision. As of the time of this report, the coroner’s office for Sacramento County had not yet released the names of those who died in the crash, pending notification of relatives.

Intersection Accidents

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 43 percent of all accidents either occur at intersections or have some relationship to intersections. The numbers are staggering at over 2.5 million per year.

Why Left Turns Are Dangerous

Intersection accidents are common. Drivers know that turning left at an intersection is much more dangerous than making a right turn because there are multiple things to keep an eye on while turning. Drivers have to keep an eye on the traffic lights and spot oncoming traffic while judging what speed the vehicles are traveling at. They have to keep a lookout for motorcyclists, bicycle riders, and pedestrians. When turning, the driver also has to be aware of the blind spot by the windshield’s side that can hide the view of a pedestrian. While this is enough to be concerned about, defects in the construction, design or functionality of an intersection can add to intersection dangers.

How Drivers Can Improve Their Safety When Turning Left

Because turning left can be tricky and increase the risk of a crash, there are certain measures a driver can take to be safer, according to the American Automobile Association.

  • Do not attempt a left turn at intersections without arrows indicating when it’s safe to turn left.
  • If the intersection has heavy traffic, it can be a dangerous intersection. Consider proceeding to the next intersection or make three right turns. Yes, it might take a little more gasoline but lowers the risk of an accident a lot.
  • Yield to oncoming traffic before attempting a turn. Drivers tend to drive faster through intersections, and it can be difficult to judge what their speed is.
  • Signal your left turn well in advance, so oncoming traffic will know your intention.
  • Stay in the appropriate lane when entering the street you are turning onto. You can change lanes afterward.
  • Allow time to turn, and don’t try to speed through the intersection.
