Recent Arrest in Connection With the Fatal Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash in Tracy

On October 17, 2023, officers of the Dublin Police Department and the Tracy Police Department took a suspect into custody without incident. The suspect, a San Leandro woman, age 32, was arrested on charges of hit-and-run causing death, DUI resulting in death, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, and gross vehicular manslaughter while under the influence. They were later booked into San Joaquin County jail and are being held on a bail of $2 million.

The suspect was driving in Tracy when they allegedly crashed into a pedestrian and fled the scene. Investigators tracked down the suspect party using video surveillance footage. The suspect vehicle was later identified as a 2012 Hyundai Sonata that was white in color. The vehicle was later located in the Bay Area and impounded for evidence, officials reported. Additional information on the case has not yet been released by the authorities.

Seeking Justice and Accountability in Fatal Hit-and-Run Cases

When an individual suffers fatal injuries in a pedestrian accident or another type of incident due to someone else’s careless or negligent actions, surviving family members may suffer financial and emotional devastation. While nothing may bring a loved one back, the civil justice system can hold the other party accountable for the economic and non-economic damages associated with the loss of life. Eligible claimants may be compensated for the loss of the decedent’s care, companionship, and protection, mental anguish, funeral costs, loss of financial support they received and would have expected to receive in the future from the deceased, and more.

Proving liability in a fatal pedestrian accident may be challenging as the loved one is no longer around to provide their account of the incident. Unless there are eyewitnesses, local law enforcement responding to the crash only hear one version of the incident: that of the other motorist. If the negligent driver fled the scene without identifying themselves, it may make the situation more difficult, especially if police are unsuccessful in tracking down the suspect party. Fortunately, in the case above, the fleeing motorist was later arrested nearly eight months later. But what happens if a hit-and-run driver goes unidentified?

In fatal hit-and-run accident cases, it is a good idea to get in touch with an experienced attorney near you to discuss your potential case and learn how they can help you and your family by tracking down the suspect party and vehicle. The right lawyer will have the resources to effectively manage the case, including an independent investigation and working with a private investigator to track down the fleeing driver. In the meantime, the attorney will identify other sources of financial recovery, including uninsured motorist coverage, which may cover losses in a hit-and-run crash.
