Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident in Oakhurst

A family from Oakhurst is still searching for answers after a fatal hit-and-run accident claimed the life of their loved one in early July. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the incident occurred on the late night of July 7th, 2021, in the area of Elliott Drive and Road 427.

Details on the Hit-and-Run Accident Fatality in Oakhurst

According to CHP traffic officers, a 20-year-old Oakhurst man was riding his skateboard when, for unknown reasons, he was struck by behind by an unidentified vehicle. Friends who were also riding their skateboards with the Oakhurst man reported that the vehicle fled the scene immediately following the traffic collision. Unfortunately, they were unable to identify the suspect vehicle and their beloved friend succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Oakhurst man’s godfather has started a GoFundMe page to raise a reward in the value of $10,000 for any person who has information on the suspect driver and their vehicle that will lead to their arrest. As for the investigation by CHP traffic officers, it remains ongoing, and they have no information on the suspect vehicle to continue with their efforts. Authorities have indicated that they have contacted the CHP Fresno area office for assistance from their investigators.

Is There Recourse in a Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Case?

When a loved one was struck by a driver who left the scene and suffered fatal injuries as a result, surviving family members may have questions on how end-of-life medical bills, funeral expenses, and other losses will be covered. Fortunately, there may be recourse in such a situation. If the other party cannot be located, survivors may have a claim for uninsured motorist (UM) protection under their insurance policy. This is a viable option for financial recovery so long as their loved one was a member of their household and not listed as an excluded member.

While this is a first-party insurance claim, that does not necessarily mean that the insurer will be fair when it comes to compensating the family for their devastating loss. Therefore, such claims should best be left to an experienced attorney to handle. Some of the top reasons to retain legal counsel are that an independent investigation of the accident may be conducted on your behalf to ensure that fault is properly determined for the incident. Conversely, an accident attorney also has the resources to work with a private investigator to track down the suspect driver. It is best to depend on the guidance and advice of an attorney on how to move forward after such a situation.
