Fatal Four-Vehicle Crash Closes Highway 89 Near Olympic Valley
A fatal four-vehicle crash closes Highway 89 near Olympic Valley on Friday morning, February 26, 2026, on State Route 89 north of Tahoe City, near the entrance to Olympic Valley.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported just before 6:50 a.m., approximately a half-mile south of Olympic Valley Road, a primary access route for visitors heading toward Palisades Tahoe.
Authorities confirmed that four vehicles were involved in the crash, including a white van that overturned. One individual became trapped inside a vehicle, and firefighters worked to extricate the victim. Tragically, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division once next of kin have been notified.
The crash prompted the closure of all lanes of Highway 89. A SigAlert was issued at approximately 7:12 a.m., shutting down the roadway between Olympic Valley Road and a point five miles south of Truckee. The roadway reopened shortly before 9:30 a.m.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
