Fatal Crash on SR-4 and Center Avenue

On the night of Wednesday, May 10, 2023, the California Highway Patrol reported a fatal crash on SR-4 and Center Avenue in Martinez. The car accident occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. on westbound State Route 4 in the vicinity of Center Avenue, officials said.

A preliminary release revealed that a white Toyota Corolla and a gray Honda Civic were traveling westbound on State Route 4. The motorists were the sole occupants of both vehicles, according to CHP traffic officers. Both vehicles were involved in a collision causing the drivers to lose control and veer off the roadway.

After the Toyota and the Honda left the roadway, both cars went down an embankment and collided with two separate trees. First responders took the Toyota driver to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Officials indicated that the Toyota driver succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The Honda driver was declared deceased at the scene, officials said.

The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office has identified the decedent as Jeremiah Smeby, 49, of Antioch, and a San Pablo woman, age 18. A GoFundMe page has been created on behalf of the Smeby family to assist with final resting arrangements. The family of the San Pablo woman has also set up a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral and burial costs.

The fatal crash on westbound SR-4 and Center Avenue in Martinez is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Additional information on the incident was unavailable.
