Fatal Crash on Highway 99 near Yuba City

I’m Ed Smith, a Yuba City Car Accident Lawyer. A collision involving 3 vehicles left one woman with fatal injuries on Wednesday, October 18.

We would like to extend our sympathy to the family of the woman who passed away in this tragic accident.

What Happened?

On Wednesday afternoon an 80-year-old female Chico resident was driving northbound on Highway 99 in a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire. She was driving in the fast lane of traffic, approaching Hutchinson Rd, just south of Yuba City; around 1:30 p.m. For unknown reasons, the woman started to brake hard in the middle of the lane.  The hard braking caused her to veer into the opposite fast lane, heading straight towards oncoming traffic.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the woman entered the lane of an oncoming 2004 Ford pickup truck. The two vehicles rammed into each other and the pickup hit the passenger’s side door of the Sunfire and sent it into a counter-clockwise spin. The Pontiac then collided with the third vehicle involved, a Freightliner semi truck, which hit the door on the driver’s side. The woman was partially ejected after the second collision. The vehicles then blocked traffic of Highway 99 for about 90 minutes after the collision.

The woman has not been identified pending notification of her next of kin. We have learned that 51-year-old Benito Uribe of Sacramento and the two passengers in the Ford pickup reported being in pain but were not transported to a hospital. The operator of the semi truck, identified as Muhammad Bath from Yuba City, reportedly did not suffer any injuries.

Possible Injuries

A broadside collision with a large truck is probably the worst case scenario for personal injury. The force involved can easily overcome any safety measures built into a vehicle. Also, because of the area of impact on the car, there is not much space or protective barrier between the driver and the impacting vehicle. The parties involved in this crash were all reportedly wearing their seat belts, but the second collision was so forceful that it caused the woman’s body to be partially ejected from her own car. Head injuries are most likely the cause of death in situations such as these, but other injuries to the heart or thoracic region can also prove fatal.

The occupants of the Ford pickup all complained of pain which could be from knees hitting the dashboard or muscle soreness due to the violent nature of a car accident. When people are in a car accident their muscles will tense up and try to brace or support the joints. The strain that is put on them to resist the jarring crash can cause soreness or even muscle tears. Cervical sprains, or whiplash, is another common car accident injury and can be caused by damage to one or more structures in the neck such as the muscles, ligaments, or even bones.
