Fatal Collisions in Nevada County

Nevada County is a beautiful place right at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Residents enjoy easy access to many incredible natural areas as well as a small-town atmosphere in their own communities. However, rural roads can be dangerous, especially in mountainous areas, and, in many cases, car accidents end in tragedy. It isn’t possible to say when or where fatal car accidents will happen, but learning information about fatal collisions in Nevada County can help residents improve their safety while driving on local roads.

Collisions Overview

The following information is taken from research published by UC Berkeley researchers based on reports by CHP and local Nevada County traffic officers. According to the data, there were 5,132 injury-causing crashes across the county between the beginning of 2007 and the end of 2018. The large majority of these crashes involved either minor or moderate injuries. Another ten percent involved severe injuries, while 2.81 percent were fatal. Across 144 fatal Nevada County crashes, 155 people lost their lives.

These collisions involved 21 motorcycle accidents, 4 bicycle crashes, and 12 wrecks involving a pedestrian. 97 of these collisions (around 67 percent) happened on state highways while the remainder took place on county or municipal roads. Additionally, Nevada County’s accident fatality rate was lower than neighboring Yuba and Sierra Counties by around 1 and 5 percent respectively, but higher than Placer County by around 1 percent.

The Cost of Fatal Accidents

When people pass away in car accidents, their family members and friends are often devastated. Dealing with the sudden loss of a person you care about can be very difficult, and processing your grief takes time and strength. However, fatal accidents also often have financial consequences as well. Not only do families need to worry about how they are going to pay for funeral and burial costs, but losing a member of your household can also mean losing an important source of income and/or household services.

While it’s impossible to replace somebody you love, grieving families deserve financial support and can often get help by contacting a Nevada City Wrongful Death Lawyer and filing a wrongful death claim. By filing a claim against insurance companies and/or parties responsible for the accident, families are commonly able to recover payments for both personal and financial losses.
