Fatal Car Crashes in San Joaquin County

On Friday, March 31, 2023, officials in San Joaquin County reported several fatal car crashes on State Route 99. The chain reaction accident occurred along a stretch of Highway 99 near the Manteca area and involved a total of six vehicles, including a tractor-trailer.

Details on the Series of Fatal Car Crashes on SR-99 in San Joaquin County

According to the California Highway Patrol, the first traffic collision occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. near Manteca. A black Honda Accord was headed northbound on SR-99 just south of French Camp Road when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle allegedly rear-ended a U-Haul truck with a flatbed trailer. The U-Haul truck reportedly struck a big rig which resulted in a second collision. No injuries were reported in these two accidents, according to CHP traffic officers.

The Honda driver allegedly made a U-turn on northbound Highway 99 and was headed the wrong way. As the Honda traveled southbound on the northbound lanes of SR-99, it allegedly collided with a black Subaru Impreza. The impact of the collision propelled the Honda into the center median. Sadly, the Honda driver, a Stockton woman, age 32, succumbed to her injuries. The Subaru reportedly entered another lane of traffic where the vehicle side-swiped another vehicle.

The other vehicle, a black GMC Denali truck pulling a utility trailer, allegedly came to a rest along the right shoulder of northbound SR-99. The GMC driver was uninjured, officials said. A black Chevrolet Suburban reportedly struck the Subaru head-on. The Chevrolet and the Subaru both came to a stop in the center median. The Chevrolet driver was treated for serious injuries at the hospital.

Sadly, three parties in the Subaru passed away. Officials have recently identified the three decedents who were occupants in the Subaru as three UC Davis students: Codi Orland Mateo (Pasco, WA), Margarette Guinto Ventura (Virginia Beach, VA), and Minkyu Geon (Hong Kong). A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of Margarette Ventura to assist with final resting expenses.

How a Wrongful Death Claim Helps Surviving Family Members

Wrongful death occurs when an individual suffers fatal injuries in an accident caused by the negligent or careless actions of another party or entity. The family of the decedent may have grounds for a wrongful death action against the other side. The purpose of this type of case is to make survivors whole again, and that is accomplished through the recovery of non-economic and economic damages. In a fatal car accident case, survivors generally file claims against the negligent driver and their insurance carrier. When the at-fault motorist does not have auto insurance or has insufficient liability coverage to pay for the resulting damages, family members may turn to uninsured/underinsured motorist protection.

According to the California Code of Civil Procedure Section 335.1, survivors of a close relative killed in an accident due to negligence generally have up to two years to file a case in court. However, that does not mean that surviving family members should wait that long to take legal action. Since building a case and filing requires substantial time, the statute may expire. If that occurs, the court may dismiss the matter resulting in the family losing the right to hold the other side liable for their losses.
