Fatal Car Crash on SR-4 and Pine Street
Officials recently reported a fatal car crash on SR-4 and Pine Street in the Martinez area. The incident occurred at approximately 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, and blocked all lanes of State Route 4 for a brief period, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A crash involving multiple vehicles occurred on westbound Highway 4 at Pine Street in Martinez, CHP traffic officers reported. The roadway was closed for approximately two hours after the motor vehicle collision due to a fatality that was reported.
Westbound traffic was diverted off SR-4 at Morello Avenue. Additional information on the incident was not immediately available due to an ongoing investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office has recently identified the deceased as 44-year-old San Jose resident Kelly Van Patten. According to officials, this is the second fatality reported in 2023 on Highway 4. In 2022, there were 19 fatalities from car crashes on SR-44 and 16 traffic-related deaths in 2021.
