Fairfield Police Run DUI Prevention Checkpoint

As part of an effort to curb intoxicated and distracted driving, Fairfield Police Department (FPD) ran a DUI prevention checkpoint at a high-risk location within the city from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 2019, until 2:00 a.m. the next morning. FPD says that they are working hand-in-hand with other local enforcement agencies as part of a county-wide project to reduce the number of serious accidents that take place on local roads.

Preventing DUI Accidents

The location of the checkpoint was not disclosed by police at the time of reporting. However, FPD officials said that the location would be based on traffic statistics, including the frequency of accidents and the number of DUI arrests in the area. Police stated that this would allow them the greatest opportunity for deterring drugged and drunk drivers from endangering others. Additionally, research has shown that running proactive, well-publicized DUI prevention efforts can reduce impaired driving accidents by as much as 20 percent in a given location.

Police mentioned in a press release that, in addition to embarrassment when their friends and family are notified, drivers who were caught at the checkpoint should expect the impact of their arrest to include fines, fees, jail time, license suspensions, DUI classes, and other expenses that could potentially exceed $10,000 in total.

FPD also stated in their release that people who are drunk or otherwise impaired should always either designate a driver or call a taxi service for a ride. Those who suspect that somebody is driving drunk should call 911 and report the driver to keep roadways safe.

DUI and Liability

Intoxicated drivers make a conscious decision to put the lives of other people in serious danger. Because of this, they are considered at-fault in nearly every accident case. This means that those who’ve been injured during an accident involving a DUI motorist can hold that person and/or their insurance company responsible for damages related to the crash. By filing personal injury claims against reckless drivers, people who’ve suffered serious injuries are often able to get the compensation they need to fully recover their physical and personal wellbeing.

DUI Accidents in Fairfield

Data reported by responders and published by UC Berkeley shows that there were 7,498 injury-related car accidents in Fairfield between 2007 and 2018. Four-hundred and eighty-four of these collisions were primarily caused by a driver under the influence of a mind-altering substance, while another 168 involved one or more intoxicated drivers.

While DUI accidents were less common in general, accidents that involved an intoxicated driver had a much higher fatality rate. While just around one percent of accidents, in general, involved a fatal injury, 4.6 percent of DUI accidents were deadly. This shows that Fairfield collisions are over four times as likely to be fatal if drugs or alcohol are involved.
