Exploding Auto Sunroofs

I’m Ed Smith, a Roseville auto accident attorney. Throughout the mass recalls for various vehicles in the world today, exploding sunroofs has its place for the most frightening defects in automobiles.

What Happened?

Eric Hernandez, the owner of a 2006 Scion TC, was on his way to work when the sunroof shattered spontaneously. Thankfully, Hernandez was not injured by the glass. After the incident, Hernandez researched online and found that others with the same vehicle had encountered the same problem as him. To verify if your vehicle has a recall for a defect, you may visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s page for its Keeping You Safe search engine.

Possible Cause for Exploding Sunroofs

Bob Beranek, a glass expert from the Auto Glass Safety Council, expects more reports involving spontaneous glass breaks on other vehicle models. Beranek suspects that some automobile manufacturers are incorporating thinner glass in vehicles to provide better fuel efficiency. Beranek also stated that sunroof glass breaks can happen at any time whether you are driving or not.

How to Protect Yourself from Exploding Sunroofs

A majority of moonroofs and sunroofs are made of tempered glass. This type of glass can shatter if there is a flaw and it is under pressure. In order to protect yourself from a sunroof that shatters, close the shade cover. The shade cover will protect the cabin of the vehicle from breaking glass. To prevent your sunroof from shattering, experts state that you should keep the sunroof slightly cracked open to air out the vehicle on hot days. This method prevents the build up of heat between the glass and the visor.
