A new study showed that exosomes might be able to help individuals recover functional abilities following a traumatic brain injury. Over the past few years, brain injuries have been a major focus of the medical community. This has led to new methods of TBI diagnosis and treatment. While these developments are significant, they have not shown the ability to reverse the damage that has already taken place. This often includes significant motor deficits (such as paralysis) and sensory issues (such as chronic pain). As a result, it can take doctors a while to make a diagnosis of a TBI. The longer it takes to diagnosis an injury, the more delayed the treatment process will be.

Exosomes Can Reverse Brain Damage

In the research paper published in the Journal of Neurotrauma, a team of scientists showed that exosomes were able to reverse brain damage in animals. Exosomes often function as “cargo” molecules throughout the brain and nervous system. These molecules carry messages from neuron to neuron. Therefore, they play a significant role in motor and sensory function.

Experiments carried out in animals showed that exosomes can act as mediators that can regenerate brain cells that have been damaged. In essence, these molecules can facilitate communication among neighboring cells in the nervous system. If cells can communicate, their function can be restored. Therefore, exosomes could help in the treatment of brain injuries.

Moving Forward with a Novel Brain Injury Treatment

The study has shown that exosomes can be useful in reversing neurological damage in animals. The researchers are laying the groundwork to carry out similar studies in people. If these studies prove to be successful in human trials, the next step would be drug approval. Exosomes can be stored safely on a shelf and can be given as an injection in individuals who have been diagnosed with a brain injury.

Exosomes have been shown to reverse brain damage. If the results are consistent in human patients, this treatment might revolutionize the way traumatic brain injuries are treated.
