Eureka Injury Bicycle Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka personal injury lawyer. A bicyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a car in Eureka on the evening of Friday, May 18, 2018. Reports stated that the collision took place in the downtown area during high-traffic hours. Medics transported the man to a local hospital for treatment. Eureka Police Department (EPD) and the Humboldt Fire Authority both assisted with responding to the traumatic crash. EPD noted that the accident involved only one vehicle in addition to the bike and did not report any further injuries.

According to EPD reports, the accident happened at about 5:25 p.m. close to the intersection of B Street and 4th Street near the North Coast Co-op. EPD’s Sgt. Ed Wilson reported that multiple witnesses said the bicycle entered B Street at a quick speed. After entering the street, the rider was struck by a gold Saturn sedan that had been traveling west in the number three roadway lane.

The cyclist was knocked off of his bicycle and rolled onto the front of the vehicle before falling onto the road. Pictures that were taken at the accident scene show damage to the front of the bike as well as damage to the Saturn’s windshield and the driver’s side of the front bumper.

Response

Medical response officials found the cyclist with severe trauma and put him on a gurney before having him transported to the hospital. About twenty minutes after the crash occurred, EPD confirmed that the man had suffered an open leg fracture. Additionally, reports state the cyclist had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Investigation

Sgt. Wilson reported that EPD does not suspect driving and/or biking under the influence as a factor in this accident. EPD is still investigating exactly what caused the collision, and it remains unclear what factors may have been at play.

These types of collisions are commonly caused by things such as distracted driving or biking, a vehicle or bicycle part defect, a medical emergency, defects in roadways, speeding, and more.

Leg Fractures

Leg fractures can be severe and are sometimes hard to recover from. Depending on the type of fracture, these injuries can even lead to potentially deadly complications such as infections and circulatory collapse. If the fracture affects the upper leg or femur, surgery is often necessary. With almost all leg fractures, the injured individuals will have difficulty walking for some time.
