Eureka Accident
Eureka Crash Kills Pedestrian

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka car accident lawyer. Area officials have stated that one pedestrian was fatally injured as the result of an accident that occurred just outside of Eureka. The accident reportedly took place on Highway 101 during the night of Saturday, August 4, 2018. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has stated that they will release the identity of the pedestrian after a positive identification report and family notification. My condolences are sent out to the family of the pedestrian who lost his life in this tragic accident as they grieve the loss of their friend and family member.

Crash Information

According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports, a 22-year-old resident of Eureka had been driving a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer southbound on Highway 101 to the north of the Herrick Avenue exit when the accident took place. CHP said that the Chevy was traveling at around 50 miles per hour when a 29-year-old pedestrian suddenly entered the highway from the left-hand side. The Chevy driver attempted to stop his vehicle to avoid a collision but ultimately struck the pedestrian head-on.

Response

After being notified about an accident involving a severely injured pedestrian, CHP dispatched responders to the crash site. When they arrived, medical officials found the pedestrian with serious trauma and had him taken to the St. Joseph Hospital by ambulance. Tragically, the man was declared deceased shortly after arriving at the trauma center.

Responders noted that the driver of the Chevy did not receive injuries during the accident.

Investigation

Investigators from CHP are currently looking into possible causal factors involved in this collision. Officers have stated that they do not suspect the Chevy driver to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. Accidents such as this one can be caused by a variety of factors that often include things like driving while distracted by a cell phone, poor roadway lighting, brake failure, and more.

Pedestrian Accidents

This accident took place shortly after another serious pedestrian crash in Eureka. On Wednesday, July 12, 2018, a man from Oregon was left with major injuries after he was involved in a crash that took place in the Big Lagoon area on Highway 101. The man had been retrieving a surfboard that fell out of his truck when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Pedestrian accidents are very dangerous, and pedestrians are liable to receive severe injuries in the event of a crash. Even when vehicles are traveling at a low rate of speed, a collision with a pedestrian can cause a wide range of severe injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal trauma, bone fractures, and more.
