Why Do Hit-and-Runs Happen?

Hit-and-runs often occur when a driver chooses to flee the scene of an accident to avoid legal action, financial responsibility, or both. Alcohol and drug impairment and inexperience behind the wheel may also be factors in some cases involving a pedestrian fatality.

Some hit-and-run drivers do not realize that they are legally obligated to remain at the scene until police arrive and exchange information with any involved parties. In other instances, motorists may panic after causing an accident and feel that leaving is their only option. Whatever the reason for fleeing, hit-and-run accidents can have serious consequences for everyone involved.

Finding a Hit-and-Run Driver

Due to their nature, it can be challenging to identify those who commit hit-and-runs on public roads, but luckily, there are a few ways to increase the chances of catching them. Investigators collect as much information as possible at the scene; by taking pictures, obtaining license plate numbers from witnesses and the injured party. Finally, many areas now have traffic surveillance cameras to help law enforcement officials track down hit-and-run suspects after an accident.

How Uninsured/Underinsured Insurance Helps in a Hit-and-Run in California

If you’re involved in a hit-and-run accident, the financial burden of recovering can be overwhelming. In California, uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage helps protect you against losses due to hit-and-run accidents.

Even though UM/UIM won’t help you find the responsible driver, it will help you get back on your feet financially by providing you with the necessary funds. With UM/UIM coverage, you can pursue a lawsuit against the at-fault driver and their insurance company for any additional costs incurred due to the accident.

Wrongful Death Claims

Filing a wrongful death claim can be helpful when you have lost a loved one due to the negligence of another person. It helps the family find justice for their loved one and a sense of closure. Some of the monetary assistance a wrongful death claim can provide are:

  • Funeral and burial costs
  • The lost wages the individual would have earned if she/he had lived
  • Medical expenses if a survival action is filed
  • Loss of parental guidance and nurturing
  • Loss of consortium
  • Household help if the decedent provided assistance around the home, such as lawn care and child-rearing
