Early Rehabilitation is Vital for Recovery

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Brain Injury Lawyer. Neurological injuries continue to challenge modern society in more ways than one. When a patient or a loved one has suffered a traumatic brain injury, the immediate aftermath can be overwhelming for everyone involved. While it can be a challenge to remain focused, it is important for any rehabilitation following a brain injury to begin as rapidly as possible.

Early Recovery Backed Up by Research

The process of caring for someone who has suffered a traumatic brain injury, particularly when they have developed severe symptoms, can create a feeling where caution is vital. It can be tempting to be as careful as possible out of a fear of causing further damage. While these fears are natural, there have been numerous studies showing that patients with neurological injuries make a faster and stronger recovery if rehabilitation is started at an early stage. Therefore, once a patient has been diagnosed, it is important to talk about a treatment process and a rehabilitation process immediately. This will increase the potential for both survival and a successful recovery back to a patient’s original baseline.

Rehabilitation is a Multidisciplinary Process

Regardless of the type of traumatic brain injury that a patient might have suffered, the rehabilitation process will be a team effort. The recovery process will likely start while a patient is still in a hospital. Depending on the type of damage that a patient might have suffered from their traumatic brain injury, this could mean learning how to talk and eat again or it could start out with a focus on regaining various motor skills, such as writing and walking. Once a patient has been discharged, their rehab will likely continue at a skilled nursing facility or at other outpatient locations. These areas are staffed with professionals who have been trained to work with traumatic brain injury patients. They understand when to be slow and when to push harder. Through this method, patients can retain the skills they still have, recover neurological function that might have been lost, and improve their overall quality of life.

How Does Early Rehab Help?

Early rehabilitation can help to prevent a development of lifelong comorbidities that include a loss of motor and sensory functions. Damage to a brain’s neurons takes place during not only the immediate impact of an injury but also during the body’s inflammatory response. By starting a rehab process immediately after an injury, some of the connections between various neurons that have been damaged can be salvaged and restored. This can help patients retain some of their basic functions that are important to a positive future.
