car accident clovis ca today

I’m Ed Smith, a Fresno car accident lawyer. A single-vehicle accident occurred north of Clovis on the night of Sunday, September 3, 2017. Sadly, this collision claimed the life of a young man.

We would like to extend our condolences to the loved ones of the young man that passed away in this devastating crash.

What Happened?

An 18-year-old Fresno man was driving his 2001 Chevrolet Malibu westbound along Copper Avenue in the vicinity of Minnewawa Avenue at approximately 9:20 pm. The man allegedly lost control, causing his vehicle to veer off the roadway and collide with several fence posts. The car came to a rest on its side after crashing into an aluminum gate and dirt embankment.

Was Anybody Injured?

A passing motorist stopped at the accident scene and contacted 911. When emergency personnel arrived, they found that the driver of the Chevrolet was able to exit his vehicle and remove his 19-year-old passenger out of the front passenger seat. Upon medical evaluation, the young passenger was declared deceased at the scene. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as a resident of Fresno.

Accident Investigation

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is handling the single-vehicle crash investigation. They have not yet released an exact cause of the collision. Usually, Traffic Accident Reports take one to two weeks to be processed. However, officials noted various signs of alleged drunken driving behavior from the driver of the Chevrolet. Upon examination, they discovered that the man had a .34 blood alcohol concentration, over four times the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle. Investigators also found a backpack containing marijuana and multiple prescription medications. The motorist was questioned about the backpack contents, however, he denied using drugs or consuming alcohol. He was treated at the Community Regional Medical Center before being booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter. The man may face more charges as the investigation continues.

Drunk Driving Accidents

Accidents involving intoxicated motorists can occur at any time. This behavior is a severe offense that tends to result in injuries and death each year. The key to avoiding such incidents is prevention. If someone has been consuming alcohol, contact a rideshare company, such as Uber or Lyft, to take them home. Never ride as a passenger in the vehicle of a suspected drunk driver. If you plan on drinking with multiple parties, set up a designated driver to take you all home safely. Following these safety tips may ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones. For more information, contact an experienced Fresno car accident lawyer.
