Drunk Driving Suspected in Modesto Auto Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto personal injury lawyer. Authorities suspect drunk driving played a role in a traffic accident which occurred in north Modesto on May 26, 2018. Shortly after 6:30 in the evening, a red Honda Civic was traveling westbound along Kiernan Avenue in the vicinity of Carver Road when the driver allegedly failed to stop for a red light at the intersection. A black Maserati was traveling southbound along Carver Road and was unable to avoid the Honda in its path, resulting in a serious broadside collision. The impact caused the Honda to spin out of control moments before coming to a rest along the center divide of Kiernan Avenue. The Honda driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment of moderate injuries while the Maserati driver suffered injuries described as minor.

Accident Investigation

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has not yet released a cause of the accident. However, CHP investigators suspect drunk driving on the part of the Honda driver. It is not yet known whether the motorist of the Honda will face DUI-related charges.

Motor Vehicle Accident Causes and Statistics

Car accidents tend to result in significant harm to passenger vehicle occupants due to the impact absorbed by the crash. Some of the following statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration may surprise you.

  • Any amount of alcohol within an individual’s bloodstream can affect their driving ability, further increasing their risk of an accident. Nearly twenty-nine individuals pass away in alcohol-related vehicle accidents each day in the United States. Approximately 10,497 deaths occurred as a result of alcohol-impaired driving accidents in 2016.
  • Speeding puts the lives of others on the road in serious danger. In 2016, speeding caused 10,111 fatalities, accounting for more than one-quarter of all traffic deaths that same year. Fifty percent of speeding drivers involved in deadly collisions were reportedly unrestrained at the time of the crash.
  • Driving safely requires your full attention, free of distractions such as texting, eating or drinking, adjusting your navigation or entertainment system and more. When your attention is diverted from driving, it increases your risk of crashing. In 2015, fifteen percent of injury crashes and ten percent of fatal accidents were caused by distracted driving.
  • Driving while drowsy is never a good idea as it limits your attention to the road. Crashes caused by drowsy driving claimed the lives of 824 in 2015.
