Drunk Driver Injures Pedestrian in Sacramento

A recent Sacramento accident ended with serious injuries to a pedestrian after being struck by a suspected drunk driver. The accident occurred at 16th Street in Midtown between P and Q Streets at about 11:00 p.m. Officers with the Sacramento Police Department reported that the vehicle then fled the scene of the collision. A good Samaritan who saw the accident followed the fleeing driver and reported their location to police. The drunk driver was stopped later at Jibboom Street and taken into custody. The driver was identified as 28-year-old Angelica Martinez. The injured pedestrian was reported as having suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Obtaining Compensation Following an Accident Injury

Car accident lawyers handle all types of motor vehicle crashes, including pedestrian, bicyclist, and motorcyclist injuries. If you have suffered an injury caused by a negligent motorist, you need a seasoned accident lawyer to help you obtain fair compensation. An experienced attorney has a number of techniques at their disposal to investigate a case. It includes examining the police report to check for inaccuracies and interviewing witnesses to the collision. In the case where a drunk driver is involved, as in the one above, a conviction provides the proof that negligence was involved in the accident injuries that occurred. This can be used to support your claim for fair compensation, which includes all of your medical expenses, wages you lost from being off work, and your pain and suffering.

Drunk Driving

Approximately 30 people are killed daily in drunk driving accidents. Although the number of fatalities due to drunk driving has decreased, this behavior claims approximately 10,000 lives each year. To understand why drinking has such a horrific effect on safety, it is important to understand what alcohol does to a person. Let’s look at the effects alcohol has at different blood alcohol content (BAC) levels starting at the lowest amount.

  • BAC level of 0.02: This low level of alcohol affects the imbiber’s judgment and mood. Their ability to multitask is lowered. They also have visual difficulties, such as tracking an object.
  • BAC level of 0.05: The person’s behavior may become exaggerated, and their level of alertness is diminished. Their ability to steer is affected. They become less coordinated, and their response to an emergency may be delayed.
  • BAC level of 0.08: This is the legal limit of alcohol. If a driver has reached a level of 0.08, they may be arrested for drunk driving. Some effects include poor balance, hearing, and slurred speech. Reasoning, memory, and self-control are impaired. A driver often will not control their speed and might not be able to detect normal traffic signals.
  • BAC level of 0.10: At this level, the person is clearly intoxicated. They are unable to stay in their lane and often weave in and out of traffic. They will also be unable to brake appropriately.
