Driver Suffers Major Injuries in Fiery Crash with Big Rig in Grass Valley
Driver suffers major injuries after a serious collision with a semi-truck on the Golden Center Freeway (Highway 49) near Dorsey Drive in Grass Valley, officials reported Tuesday, June 10, 2025. The crash occurred around 2:15 p.m., prompting a swift response from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Grass Valley division and local emergency crews.
Fire Erupts After Collision; Driver Escapes Burning Vehicle
Firefighters responded to the scene after the collision caused the car to catch fire. Remarkably, the injured driver was able to exit the burning vehicle without assistance and remained alert while awaiting medical attention. CHP released photos showing the car lodged beneath the rear of the big rig’s trailer, with severe damage extending up to the windshield. The trailer also sustained damage from the fire.
Big Rig Driver Uninjured; Highway Temporarily Shut Down
The driver of the big rig was not injured in the collision. Due to the severity of the crash and resulting fire, southbound lanes of the Golden Center Freeway were temporarily closed south of Dorsey Drive. Traffic was eventually redirected through the center divider, allowing vehicles to pass while officials worked to clear debris and investigate the scene.
Investigation Ongoing into Cause of Crash
Authorities have not yet released details of what may have led to the collision. The CHP is continuing its investigation to determine whether factors such as driver error, mechanical failure, or potential violations contributed to the crash.
How to Stay Safe When Sharing the Road with Large Trucks
Sharing the road with commercial trucks requires extra caution due to their size, weight, and longer stopping distances. Always avoid lingering in a truck’s blind spots—particularly along the sides and directly behind the trailer. Maintain a safe following distance, use signals early when changing lanes, and be patient when trucks are maneuvering or braking. Awareness and defensive driving can significantly reduce the risk of devastating collisions like this one.
