Deadly Collision on Highway 299 west of Redding Leaves Five Dead
A deadly Highway 299 collision on Highway 299 west of Redding claimed the lives of five individuals and left another individual seriously injured on Saturday evening, September 19, 2026.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the collision occurred at about 9:15 p.m. along Highway 299, west of Redding. The crash involved two vehicles traveling in opposite directions before they collided head-on.
CHP’s initial findings indicate that a Honda sedan with three occupants was headed west on Highway 299 when it entered the eastbound side of the highway after crossing the double-yellow centerlines.
The Honda subsequently struck an eastbound Toyota Prius, which was also occupied by three people. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the Honda to travel into the path of oncoming traffic.
Five Fatalities Reported After Highway 299 Crash
The collision proved fatal for all three individuals traveling in the Honda.
The driver of the Toyota Prius was also pronounced dead at the scene. One of those passengers later died from their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to five. The remaining passenger suffered major injuries and received hospital treatment.
Investigators may examine roadway evidence, vehicle damage, witness statements, available electronic vehicle data, and other information to determine the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
Head-On Collision Safety
Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous types of motor vehicle collisions because the combined forces of vehicles traveling in opposite directions can result in severe or fatal injuries.
Drivers should remain within their designated lanes, avoid distractions, and adjust their speed for roadway and visibility conditions. On two-lane highways, motorists should also use additional caution around curves and avoid passing unless it is both legal and safe to do so.
