Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Semi Shuts Down Highway 99 Near Durham
Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Semi Shuts Down Highway 99 Near Durham. On Friday Morning, at approximately 7:14 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025, officers from the California Highway Patrol’s Oroville and Chico units responded to a major crash on State Route 99 just north of Shippee Road, southeast of Durham. The collision involved three vehicles, including a semi-truck, and temporarily shut down the highway.
Chain-Reaction Collision Leads to Semi Striking Orchard
Based on CHP’s preliminary investigation, the crash was triggered when a southbound sedan failed to see a vehicle ahead slowing down to turn left into a private driveway. The sedan rear-ended the slowing vehicle, causing both cars to veer into the northbound lanes and into the path of an oncoming big rig.
Although the semi-truck driver attempted to avoid the collision, the truck was struck, forced off the road, and came to a stop in a nearby almond orchard. The impact scattered debris across the roadway and prompted a significant emergency response.
Emergency Response and Reported Injuries
The collision prompted a response from multiple agencies, including fire crews, CHP, and emergency medical personnel. An air ambulance and two ground ambulances were initially requested. Extrication was required for at least one individual trapped inside a vehicle, while another victim was found lying in the roadway.
All drivers involved were transported to local hospitals for medical care. CHP later confirmed that the reported injuries were considered minor, though the nature of the crash initially suggested potentially more serious outcomes.
Road Closures and Recovery Efforts
The crash resulted in a full closure of Highway 99 for a period of time as first responders secured the scene, provided medical aid, and cleared the damaged vehicles. Tow trucks and road crews worked quickly to reopen the highway, while CHP thanked its partner agencies for assisting in restoring traffic flow.
Why Legal Support Matters After Truck Accidents
Even when injuries are classified as “minor,” collisions involving semi-trucks can lead to hidden complications such as soft tissue injuries, concussions, or long-term physical impacts. Trucking accidents often involve multiple parties—drivers, employers, and insurers—making claims complex and challenging to navigate alone. A skilled personal injury attorney can help ensure victims are not pressured into unfair settlements and instead receive the compensation they deserve.

Roadway Safety Reminder
Highway 99 is a busy corridor for both passenger and commercial traffic, making safe driving habits essential. Motorists should remain alert, maintain safe following distances, and anticipate sudden slowdowns, especially in areas with frequent driveway and intersection access points. Sharing the road responsibly with large trucks helps reduce the risk of chain-reaction crashes like this one.
