CHP to Team Up With Other Agencies
Officials from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Headquarters, located in Sacramento, issued a press release that they will be partnering with 11 other agencies, including state patrols, highway patrols, and state police forces to form the Western States Traffic Safety Coalition. This safety campaign will be focused on giving drivers “a dozen reasons not to speed.”
The states targeted in the increased enforcement effort will be:
- California
- Colorado
- Arizona
- Montana
- Idaho
- Nevada
- North Dakota
- South Dakota
- Washington
- Oregon
- Utah
- Wyoming
The additional enforcement campaign will run from June 25th (Friday) through June 27th (Sunday).
Why is Additional Enforcement Needed?
There was a substantial increase in fatalities and speed-related traffic incidents in 2020. More than 500 travelers lost their lives in California last year, and more than 57,000 people suffered injuries in collisions that were the result of excessive speed. Additionally, last year CHP officers gave out more than 28,000 speeding tickets to drivers who were traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour. That trend has continued into 2021, with more than 9,000 100+ mph citations being handed out in the first four months of this year.
Driving at excessive speeds puts everyone on the road at risk.
Other Violations Targeted
Officers will not be limiting the additional enforcement efforts to speeding. They will also be on the lookout for child safety seat and seatbelt violations and evidence of impaired driving and distracted driving.

What a Speeding Ticket Will Cost You
If you are driving at dangerous speeds and only get a ticket rather than cause an accident, you should consider yourself lucky. Additional enforcement is done in hopes that the economic impact of a speeding ticket will act as a deterrent to those who may choose to drive at unsafe speeds.
The cost of a speeding ticket includes the fine in addition to penalties and surcharges. The base fine is dependent on how fast you were traveling. The fines for various speeds are:
- 1-15 miles per hour above the speed limit: $35
- 16-25 miles per hour above the speed limit:$70
- 26-99 miles per hour above the speed limit: $100
- 100 miles per hour or more above the speed limit: $200
Some violations come with greater penalties if the driver has a prior conviction. If the speeding violation occurred within a work zone, the penalties will be higher.
In addition to the cost of a speeding ticket, the points on your DMV record will likely cause your automobile insurance premiums to rise.
