Correctional Officer Charged in Elk Grove Fatal DUI Crash

I’m Ed Smith, an Elk Grove wrongful death attorney. A suspect in a July 2016 fatal drunk driving collision in Elk Grove recently turned himself into police. It turns out the man is a youth correctional officer in Stockton.

Laguna Boulevard Traffic Fatality

It was a frightful scene along Laguna Boulevard on a July afternoon last month. Elk Grove Police Department personnel said a man lost control of his vehicle and struck a Prius, killing the man inside and injuring three other people.

Accident Caused By Drunk Driver

One of the injured was Rajnel Nath, 39, who police now indicate was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The deadly accident happened on July 8, 2016. However, Nath was not arrested and charged until Tuesday, August 17, 2016.

Why Did It Take So Long To Arrest This Guy?

Some in the community of Elk Grove wonder why it took so long for authorities to make an arrest.

Authorities explained they have been building a case around the events leading up to the fatal crash. They said things didn’t start and end at the site of the fatal crash, but actually began at a pizza restaurant down the street from the crash.

Thanks to numerous sources of information, police were able to develop a very detailed and clear timeline of events leading up to the fatal collision, according to the Elk Grove Police Department.

Suspect Involved in Two Crashes In One Day

Witnesses said Nath was at the Chicago Fire Pizza on Laguna Boulevard in Elk Grove earlier on the day of the crash and had been drinking. He reportedly hit a parked car while leaving the parking lot. After that debacle, and less than one mile down the road, authorities said Nath struck and fatally injured a 63-year-old man named Jeffrey Fields.

Investigators Claim They Were Just Building Their Case

Investigators explained that it may appear like it took a long time to make an arrest but that when it comes to police investigations they like to make sure they investigate in a thorough and methodical manner so they don’t just arbitrarily make an arrest without having a complete package of what happened.

Man Charged Has Been Employed for 16 Years by a Stockton Youth Correctional Facility

Nath has been employed as a correctional officer at a Stockton Youth Correctional center for the past 16 years.

He was recently charged with:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol causing death;
  • Gross vehicular manslaughter;
  • Hit and run property damage.

His bail has been set at $450,000.

What Is A Wrongful Death Claim?

Watch the Youtube video below that I put together that explains what a wrongful death claim is:

I’ve been helping those injured in auto accidents recover damages for their personal injuries or wrongful deaths for over 3 decades.

When filing personal injury lawsuits in California, you have only 2 years from the date of injury to file. If you are making a claim against a public entity, you have even less time. You only have 6 months from the date of injury to file a claim against the government. After that there are very strict timelines. Give me a call if you have questions concerning statute of limitations (filing deadlines).

Take some time to look up my reviews: Yelp, Google and Avvo.
