Complications of Concussions

A severe head or brain injury, such as a concussion can happen at any time. Some of the most common ways that people sustain concussions include:

  • Blows to the head that occur in contact sports such as football, soccer, and lacrosse
  • Serious motor vehicle collisions
  • Pedestrian injuries where someone strikes his or her head on the pavement
  • Slip and fall accidents
  • Motorcycle and bicycle accidents

Signs and Symptoms of Concussions

Several signs and symptoms could indicate that someone has suffered a concussion. Some of these include:

  • Chronic, recurring headaches that are often described as a “squeezing” or a “pounding” sensation
  • A possible loss of consciousness
  • Confusion such as not knowing the current time or place
  • A loss of memories surrounding the accident
  • Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Emotional irritability

Those who suffer a concussion in a traumatic accident may receive a scan of the head. This could mean a CT scan or an MRI. Unlike other traumatic brain injuries, concussions often do not show any brain damage on an imaging scan.

Long-Term Complications of Concussions Can Occur

Those who suffer repeated concussions could end up sustaining long-term complications. Some of the complexities of repeated concussions include:

  • Chronic headaches that could require daily medications
  • Changes in personality that could consist of aggression and irritability
  • Chronic pain that runs down the arms or legs
  • Early-onset dementia such as Alzheimer’s
  • Long-term memory loss
  • Possible Second-Impact Syndrome from a new concussion, which could prove fatal

Because of these complications, it is essential for everyone to receive treatment as quickly as possible. This includes seeing a doctor, resting from school or work, taking certain medications, or altering the daily routine.
