Citrus Heights Sexual Assault

A man suspected of sexually assaulting an elderly woman in her Citrus Heights home has been taken into custody by police.

What Happened

Citrus Heights Police Department Officers responded to a 6:30 am call on Thursday, August 31. The victim reported that she had been sexually assaulted, and with the help of a police sketch artist was able to release an image of her attacker by Thursday evening. Patrol officers and detectives then canvassed the area, conducted interviews, and collected forensic and video evidence leading them to a suspect.

Fast Police Response

Police then identified the suspect as Dustin Smith- a neighbor who was unknown to the victim- less than 24 hours after releasing the composite sketch. Investigators obtained a warrant to search Smith’s home where they discovered evidence linking him to the crime scene. Smith has been charged and booked into the Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of rape, elder abuse, burglary, and oral copulation.

Citrus Heights Police Chief Ron Lawrence was quick to commend his officers for their dedication and police work resulting in the capture of the suspect within 36 hours of the initial call. Notably, the Chief also honored the victim for her courage and tremendous strength in helping investigators identify the subject.

Resources for the Victims of Sexual Assault

Sexual assault and rape are serious crimes and punishable by law. Law enforcement, medical professionals, and an experienced attorney can help you get the care and justice you deserve. If you have been the victim of sexual assault, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Trained medical professionals will be able to treat your injuries and collect evidence should you decide to report the crime. Victims are sometimes hesitant to report sexual assaults for a variety of reasons including fear of reprisals. Survivors of sexual assault often wait and use the evidence collected by doctors to press charges months later. There are no laws preventing you from reporting your attack and no time limit to report in California.
