Ivy Street Intersection Site of Motor Vehicle Crash With Pedestrian

A pedestrian accident on October 22 caused major injuries in a crash with a motor vehicle in Chico. The accident happened at the Ivy Street intersection with West Third Street. Chico Police Department officers arrived at the scene and said the walker was crossing the street when the accident happened.

Accident Under Investigation to Determine Fault

Information was not provided on whether the motorist who struck the pedestrian remained at the scene. The intersection and surrounding area were shut down for around two hours while an investigation was conducted into the cause of the pedestrian accident. Those who might have information about this accident are asked to call (530) 895-4911, which is the traffic unit of the police department.

Causes of an Intersection Accident Involving a Pedestrian

There are many reasons why an intersection accident might occur between a motor vehicle and a pedestrian. The most common cause is negligence on the part of the driver. This can include distracted driving, failing to yield the right of way or speeding. Pedestrians also have a responsibility to follow traffic laws and be aware of their surroundings. If either party fails to do their part, an accident is more likely to happen.

Impaired Driving Can Cause a Pedestrian Accident

Another potential cause of an accident at an intersection is drunk or drugged driving. Motorists who have been drinking or using drugs show poor judgment and slowed reflexes. This can lead to accidents even if the pedestrian is following the rules of the road.

Intersection collisions can often be severe due to a driver running a red light or stop sign. This is a common cause of a pedestrian accident when someone is walking through the crosswalk legally. An accident attorney can determine the cause of pedestrian injuries and help the injured party recover the compensation they deserve.

What an Injured Pedestrian Can Recover in Compensation After a Collision With a Negligent Driver

As a pedestrian who has been hit by a negligent motorist, you may be wondering what types of compensation you can recover from the driver. Depending on the severity of your injuries and the negligence of the driver, you may be able to recover both economic and noneconomic damages.

Economic damages have a clear financial value attached to them, including medical costs and wages that were lost because you could not work. Noneconomic damages are more personal such as pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life.

In California, there is no cap on the amount of noneconomic damages that a person can recover in a personal injury lawsuit. This means that if your injuries are severe and have had a significant impact on your life, you could potentially recover a large amount in compensation.
