Chico Highway Crash Hospitalizes Driver

Reports from local traffic officials state that a serious auto accident took place in the Chico Area on Tuesday, March 26, 2019. The incident happened in the early morning on a stretch of highway around five miles to the north of the city of Chico. Officers said that accident response involved a difficult extrication. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports indicated that at least one person was found with major injuries and taken to a local hospital for emergency medical care. The collision reportedly only involved one vehicle. CHP has stated that their office is investigating to determine a cause.

Crash Details

According to police, the accident happened at a busy interchange on Highway 99. At about 2:00 in the morning, a black sedan was entering Highway 99 using the on-ramp located at Cohasset Road. It is currently unknown whether or not the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. While the sedan was navigating a curve in order to enter the highway, the driver apparently lost control of their vehicle. After losing control, the driver veered off of the roadway and eventually struck a nearby tree, causing major damage to the front driver’s side of the sedan.

When emergency response officials arrived at the accident location, they found that the driver was trapped inside the sedan. The door of the sedan was cut away using special extrication equipment and the driver was safely removed from the vehicle and placed on an ambulance. The specific nature of the drivers’ injuries was not reported and updates on their condition have not been released by staff at the hospital.

Investigation

As CHP continues to investigate this crash, officers have not stated what, if any, factors they believe to have been involved. Single-vehicle accidents are common and drivers can lose control of their vehicles for a wide variety of reasons. Some of these reasons include medical issues that affect a person’s ability to drive, distracted driving, roadway hazards like slick asphalt or potholes, defective auto products such as brakes or steering systems, and more.

Accidents and Fault

After an accident happens, the parties who caused the crash can usually be held responsible for damages. In California, these parties are determined through a process called “comparative fault.” In comparative fault, courts look at what percentage of the accident was caused by each party and each party is responsible for that percentage of the total amount of damages caused by the accident.

This means that even if drivers are determined to have been driving recklessly, they may still be able to recover damages from negligent parties such as product manufactures or other reckless drivers.
