Deadly Accident in Chico
On Friday, October 21, 2016, a call came into police after a man walking his dog along the Nord Highway in Chico spotted a vehicle off the road and down in Mud Creek. This incident appears to have been a single-vehicle crash.
What Happened?
A silver Dodge Pickup truck was traveling eastbound on the highway approaching the bridge at a high speed. For unknown reasons, the truck veered off the road and struck the bridge abutment, which caused the pickup to become airborne and landed on the East side of Mud Creek in the water.
CHP Fatal Accident Investigation
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is conducting an investigation. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. There was no physical evidence at the scene of any brake application prior to the collision. Speed may have been a contributing factor. Toxicology reports are being conducted on the victims to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role.
Investigators determined that there were two men in the vehicle at the time of the collision. When authorities arrived on the scene, one occupant was found in the vehicle and the other occupant was located outside of the pickup. Sadly, both men died due to their injuries. The identity of the victims has not been released pending notification of their family. Authorities did indicate that one occupant was a 60-year old man from Stockton, California. Authorities said the other man was a 28-year old from Texas. Investigators are unsure if the victims were related to one another.
Nord Highway Closure
The Nord Highway was closed for an extended amount of time between Meridian Road and Esplanade Road in Chico while the CHP searched for clues.
