Chico DUI Collision Injures Man

I’m Ed Smith, a Chico personal injury lawyer. On Thursday, May 25, 2017, a DUI accident in Chico left a man in his early twenties with significant traumatic injuries and led to the arrest of the intoxicated driver.

Accident Details

According to information from the Chico Fire Department, the incident happened at about 8:15 p.m. on Vallombrosa Avenue close to the intersection of Manzanita Avenue in a residential area near Hooker Oak Park. A male, 21-year-old Chico resident had been driving his vehicle recklessly while headed east on Vallombrosa Avenue with a friend in the passenger seat. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing him to veer across the road and come to a complete stop after colliding with a tree in a nearby driveway.

Injuries

The passenger of the vehicle was reported to have received moderate injuries as a result of the collision and was taken by ambulance to the Enloe Medical Center for treatment and screening of more serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle sustained no reported injuries and there were no other vehicles or pedestrians involved in the accident.

DUI Arrest

Reports indicate that the driver of the vehicle had attempted to flee the scene of the accident, but was found shortly by investigating officers. Officers reported that the driver had appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and arrested him on charges of driving under the influence.

Driving Under the Influence

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 28 people in the U.S. are fatally injured in accidents caused by intoxicated drivers every day. That means that, on average, a resident of the United States is killed in a DUI accident every 53 minutes. Their research also indicates that 10,265 deaths were caused by drinking and driving in 2015.

Although fatalities caused by drunk driving have reduced by about a third over the last thirty years, the likelihood that you will be involved in a DUI accident at some point in your life is still one in three. Additionally, damages and deaths caused by DUI collisions in the U.S. are estimated to cost $52 billion annually.

Because alcohol reduces the ability of the brain to react to changing roadway conditions, drivers who think they are operating their vehicles safely while intoxicated are at a higher risk of being involved in a fatal accident even if they are doing their best to pay attention to the roadway. Drinking and driving will always increase the chances that you’ll be hurt or hurt innocent pedestrians, passengers, or drivers.
