Soak Up the Last Days of Summer this Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day is upon us, and many see it as the unofficial end of summer. That’s because the three-day holiday weekend marks the end of the summer season, while many fall activities like school and sports begin.

Considered summer vacation’s last hurrah, Labor Day weekend allows families to get out and soak up some last-minute summer fun. Make the most of this long weekend with some exciting activities below.

Take a Road Trip

Go for a Bike Ride

If you didn’t get a chance to ride a bike this summer, now is the time to hit the trails. The American River Trail (Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail) is a popular bike trail.

The 32-mile-long trail runs from Jibboom Street in Discovery Park to Beal’s Point near Folsom Lake and is used by about 5 million people every year. If you don’t have bicycles for the entire family, you can rent some at local bike companies that offer rentals.

Visit a National Park

California is fortunate to have an abundance of beautiful national parks to explore. A great national park to visit is the McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Inside the park is the spectacular Burney Falls, one of California’s most beautiful waterfalls. The water flows year-round and is easily accessed from the parking areas.

Head to the Beach

There’s no better way to enjoy the long weekend than with a dip in the ocean. Spend your final summer moments at a nearby beach. Soak up the sun and the surf by making incredible sandcastles, taking a boat ride, playing frisbee in the sand, or reading a book under an umbrella.
While Sacramento is in the middle of the California Central Valley, it is not that far from the coast. Some of the best beaches are just a few hours’ drive away. Muir Beach in Marin County is a peaceful cove and a local favorite. It is three miles west of Muir Woods and easily accessible through a pedestrian bridge from the parking lot.

Hit the Stores for Great Labor Day Sales

Labor Day is the time when retailers offer their best sales of the month. It is a great time to stock up on back-to-school essentials for your kids and fall weather clothes. Great Labor Day sales are a guaranteed way to end the summer season with a win.
Shopping experts said the best deals this Labor Day weekend will be on outdoor furniture, mattress, and summer clothes.

Turn Your Backyard into a Movie Theater

There’s nothing quite like watching a movie in your own backyard. You can easily create your own outdoor movie theater with the right equipment. All you need is a portable projector and a large screen.
You can rent a screen or tie a sheet between two trees. You’ll want a sturdy tripod to help position your picture properly on your screen. Show a movie everyone will enjoy and don’t forget the popcorn!

Watch a Movie at the Drive-In Theater

Give Netflix a break and head to a drive-in movie theater near you. With the experience of enjoying popcorn and soda from the comfort of your own car, it is affordable entertainment for the entire family.
This Labor Day weekend, the West Wind Sacramento 6 Drive-In offers $3 admission on Saturday, September 3, and free movies on Sunday, September 4. The free movie lineup includes Thor, Lightyear, Bob’s Burgers, Minions and Doctor Strange.

Set Up the Sprinkler in the Backyard

Young children love running through a sprinkler on a hot summer day. Channel your inner child and join them for a fun run-through. Jumping through a sprinkler is a great way to stay cool and get your heart pumping while enjoying quality family time. You’ll have difficulty keeping that joyful smile off your face.

Host Outdoor Games at the Park

Summertime is all about outdoor games. Gather your friends and family and spend a day playing various outdoor games at a park. Create endless outdoor fun for everyone with games such as lawn bowling, cornhole boards, or rustic ring toss.
For younger kids, grab some chalk and make a hopscotch grid or four squares on the sidewalk. Make it more fun by making up your own rules.

Go Camping in Your Own Backyard

Enjoy the no-work, no-school Monday by hosting a Sunday night sleepover under the stars. Backyard camping is about the experience of sleeping outside in a tent. Whether you’re a newbie or an expert in the great outdoors, backyard camping is a blast.
Enjoy the benefits of traditional camping without all the planning, packing, and gear. Having access to a clean bathroom and running showers is a huge perk.

Throw an End-of-Summer Party

With summer coming to an end, why not throw an end-of-summer party and give the season a nice send-off? Prepare a feast, set the mood with music, and enjoy the day with some of your favorite summer cocktails.

Whether you’re planning a pool party, a Hawaiian luau, or a bohemian backyard barbecue, make it memorable. With a celebration like this, the summer season will go out with a bang.
